PHILIP II COMES TO POWER 1556
Rachael Kang
Philip II comes to power with astonishing popularity and power. Son of Charles V, Philip II inherited his throne after his father retired to a monastery suddenly. Though Philip did not inherit Austria and the Holy Roman Empire, he did inherit the Spanish Netherlands and the American colonies. When asked about his newly inherited empire, Philip had this to say, “I thank God for my new position, and I will continue to lead this empire into prosperity in the Catholic faith. No more questions, please.”
Philip II started off his glorious reign by ending the religious conflicts between the Catholics and the Muslims (see “Defending Catholicism”). Time will only be able to tell, though, whether Philip the II will be able to keep his amazing reign at this astounding height.
Pope Calls for Jesuits!
Natasha Anbalagan
LOYOLA, SPAIN, Ignatius of Loyola avidly sought out members for his religious order for the past 18 years. With growing expansion of the teachings of the heretic, Martin Luther, devout and pious commoners cried out for a strong leader to take control and bring back Catholicism. That cry is being answered by Ignatius of Loyola. His followers have been given the name, Jesuits, by the pope.
The Jesuits are on a mission to put a stop to the spread of Calvin’s and Luther’s teachings. The order plans on founding schools all across Europe. Their teachers will be trained in classical studies and theology. They will travel to distant lands and bring Christ’s message to those who haven’t even heard His blessed name.
The pope gave his blessings to the new order with hope that they will stop the spread of protestants and that Catholicism will triumph with the grace of God.

WAR! WAR! WAR!
Jean Im
After thirteen years of bloodshed, the War of Spanish Succession has finally ended with the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht. The war began after the death of our ruler, Charles II, who chose Philip of Anjou to take his place as ruler of Spain. Philip was the grandson of Louis XIV, and a relative of the French Bourbons. But, how could an enemy of our country become our leader? Everyone should know that Charles failed to produce a successor to the throne, so he chose Philip of Anjou to take position as ruler. Since this decision, the French Bourbons who were once our enemies became our allies. However, others felt that our alliance with France would cause disruption and chaos. The countries of England, Austria, the Dutch Republic, Portugal, and German and Italian states, all felt that our unity with France would be a decision to regret. With this, the six countries band together to prevent our alliance with France. Thus, France and our country remained separate.
